Even scholastic art has been changed… We raise our glasses and fists high in a salute to what has been and what is coming with the mind-child of a student twisted onto an iconic corporate branded campaign ironically fitting to the concept… Cheers!

One of the most important groups we can remember on Memorial Day is also the one most often forgotten and ignored. Far too many of our veterans are homeless and deserve better from us; we owe them. Our taxes paid for them to fight, our freedoms are paid for with their body, minds and lives. The following statistics, information graphics and information are a sad and shocking fact. For Memorial Day remember all veterans and please find a way not to forget those who need us the most.

Homeless Veterans and the Struggle of Adjusting to Civilian Life

The Hardest War is Fought at Home. Our War Veterans are Homeless!

How Many Homeless Veterans Are There?

Accurate numbers are not available community by community. Some communities do annual counts of people seeking assistance, while others report estimates based on a variety of factors. The most widely cited estimate of the number of homeless veterans comes from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), which produces an Annual Homeless Assessment Report to Congress report with a dedicated veterans section.

In the 2010 AHAR Veteran Supplemental report HUD estimated there were over 67,000 homeless veterans on any given night in America. Over the course of a year, approximately twice that many experience homelessness.

The number of homeless veterans has decreased by more than half over the past six years, according to these reports.

To obtain the most up-to-date local estimates, contact the homeless coordinator at your nearest VA medical center or the Office of the Mayor or county government serving your area.

Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans

Combat veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF), Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) and the Global War on Terror who need help – from mental health programs to housing, employment training and job placement assistance – are beginning to seek help from the nation’s community-based homeless veteran service provider organizations. Already stressed by an increasing need for assistance by post-Vietnam-era veterans and strained budgets, homeless service providers are deeply concerned about the influx of combat veterans who will eventually be requesting their support.

As of mid-2010, VA estimates that there are 3,700 OIF/OEF veterans in its homeless-outreach programs. Approximately 550 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have been treated in VA-connected residential programs.

Why Are Veterans Homeless?

In addition to the complex set of factors influencing all homelessness – extreme shortage of affordable housing, livable income and access to health care – a large number of displaced and at-risk veterans live with lingering effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance abuse, which are compounded by a lack of family and social support networks. Military occupations and training are not always transferable to the civilian workforce, placing some veterans at a disadvantage when competing for employment.

A top priority for homeless veterans is secure, safe, clean housing that offers a supportive environment free of drugs and alcohol.

Although “most homeless people are single, unaffiliated men… most housing money in existing federal homelessness programs, in contrast, is devoted to helping homeless families or homeless women with dependent children,” as stated in the study “Is Homelessness a Housing Problem?” (Understanding Homelessness: New Policy and Research Perspectives, Fannie Mae Foundation, 1997).

Homeless Veteran Demographics

Source: “The Forgotten Americans – Homelessness: Programs and the People They Serve,” released Dec. 8, 1999, by the Interagency Council on the Homeless. Data is from the National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients (NSHAPC); visit www.huduser.org to download the NSHAPC reports.

23% of the homeless population are veterans

33% of homeless men are veterans

Only 9% of the total U.S. population are veterans (2000 U.S. Census)

47% served during the Vietnam era

17% served in the post-Vietnam era

15% served prior to the Vietnam era

67% served for 3 years or longer

33% were stationed in a war zone

25% have used VA Homeless Services

85% completed high school/GED, compared to 56% of non-veterans

89% received honorable discharges

79% reside in urban centers

16% reside in suburban areas

5% reside in rural areas

76% experience alcohol, drug, or mental health problems

46% are white males, compared to 34% of non-veterans

46% are age 45 or older, compared to 20% of non-veterans

What Services Do Homeless Veterans Need?

Homeless veterans need a coordinated effort that provides secure housing and nutritional meals; essential physical health care, substance abuse aftercare and mental health counseling; and personal development and empowerment. Veterans also need job assessment, training and placement assistance. NCHV strongly believes that all programs to assist homeless veterans must focus on helping veterans reach the point where they can obtain and sustain gainful employment. If not, clients will be unable to find and maintain safe, decent, permanent housing.

Who is Helping Homeless Veterans?

The most effective programs for homeless and at-risk veterans are community-based, nonprofit, “veterans helping veterans” groups. Programs that seem to work best feature transitional housing that offers the camaraderie of living in structured, substance-free environments with fellow veterans who are successfully regaining control of their lives. Because government money for homeless veterans is limited and VA serves less than half of this population, it is critical that community groups reach out to help provide the support, resources and opportunities most Americans take for granted: employment, housing and health care.

There are over 2,100 community-based homeless veteran service providers across the country and many other homeless assistance programs that have demonstrated impressive success reaching homeless veterans. These groups are most successful when they work in collaboration with federal, state and local government agencies; other homeless providers; and veteran service organizations. Veterans who participate in these programs have a higher chance of becoming tax-paying, productive citizens again.

Lyrics to Rage Against the Machine’s song Wake Up!

Come on!
Uggh!

Come on, although ya try to discredit
Ya still never read it
The needle, I’ll thread it
Radically poetic
Standin’ with the fury that they had in ’66
And like E-Double I’m mad
Still knee-deep in the system’s shit
Hoover, he was a body remover
I’ll give ya a dose
But it can never come close
To the rage built up inside of me
Fist in the air, in the land of hypocrisy

Movements come and movements go
Leaders speak, movements cease
When their heads are flown
‘Cause all these punks
Got bullets in their heads
Departments of police, the judges, the feds
Networks at work, keepin’ people calm
You know they went after King
When he spoke out on Vietnam
He turned the power to the have-nots
And then came the shot

Yeah!
Yeah, back in this…
Wit’ poetry, my mind I flex
Flip like Wilson, vocals never lackin’ dat finesse
Whadda I got to, whadda I got to do to wake ya up
To shake ya up, to break the structure up
‘Cause blood still flows in the gutter
I’m like takin’ photos
Mad boy kicks open the shutter
Set the groove
Then stick and move like I was Cassius
Rep the stutter step
Then bomb a left upon the fascists
Yea, the several federal men
Who pulled schemes on the dream
And put it to an end
Ya better beware
Of retribution with mind war
20/20 visions and murals with metaphors
Networks at work, keepin’ people calm
Ya know they murdered X
And tried to blame it on Islam
He turned the power to the have-nots
And then came the shot

Uggh!
What was the price on his head?
What was the price on his head!

I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard, I think I heard a shot

‘He may be a real contender for this position should he
abandon his supposed obedience to white liberal doctrine
of non-violence…and embrace black nationalism’
‘Through counter-intelligence it should be possible to
pinpoint potential trouble-makers… and neutralize them.
Through counter-intelligence it should be possible to
pinpoint potential trouble-makers… and neutralize them
and neutralize them, and neutralize them, and neutralize them’

Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!
Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!

How long? Not long, cause what you reap is what you sow

Tens of thousands of Egyptians are once again filling Cairo’s Tahrir Square in defiance of an authoritarian regime, and paying for their stand in blood and pain as security forces fire tear-gas, rubber bullets and even in some instances live ammunition. But the crowds are no longer chanting “The Army and the people are one hand!” as they did in the January rebellion that ended the 30-year rule of President Hosni Mubarak. That slogan had always been wishful thinking, particularly when applied to the Mubarak-appointed generals that eased the strongman into retirement and claimed power for themselves last February.

Egypt’s latest uprising has a more violent feel

Not everyone was pleased Tuesday when crowds in Tahrir Square revived chants of “Peaceful! Peaceful!” that were heard nine months ago during the uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak.

A group of young men, their eyes and noses red from tear gas fired at rock-throwing protesters nearby, shook their heads.

“Enough ‘peaceful’ already!” one said.

The latest demonstrations against the military leaders who replaced Mubarak are more explosive and violent than those in January and February — something that pro-democracy activists had warned might happen as the ruling generals stumbled in carrying out sweeping reforms.

Protesters hurl rocks and firebombs. Security forces fire tear gas, rubber bullets and bird shot. The number of wounded piles up at an average of 80 per hour. Angry cries of “thuggery” and “dirty government” echo among the buildings. The death toll has risen steadily.

The violence…
